You can use the booleans and, or, or not in searching. Without these booleans, the search engine will assume you're anding the words together. A string of words means you are searching for all of the words. A string of words separated by "or" means you are searching for any of the words.

This search engine does not search for substrings. It helps to put variations of a search word separated by the word "or" if you want an expansive search. For example, "jew or jewish" will yield more hits than either word alone. Another example, "religion or religious" produces more hits than either word alone. Warning: If you use both words separated by a space as in "religion religious", both words must be present to produce a hit, which is a very narrow, restrictive search.

Evaluation takes place from left to right only, although you may use parentheses () to force the order of evaluation.

You may also use wildcards (asterisks [*] ) to search for matches to the beginnings of words only - you may not put asterisks at the front or in the middle of words.

Examples

Example 1. This search evaluates the expression from left to right.
Example 2. This search will also be evaluated from left to right, although the operation in parentheses will be evaluated as a whole first.
Example 3. "john or jane" will be evaluated first, a not operation will be performed on that, then everything will be anded with doe.
Example 4. This will search for all files that contain words starting with the letter "j" and that also contain the word "doe".
